Calling Card

The first step on the road to greatness is realizing that you have a calling on your life.

Calling is something that is separate from profession-its your vocation.  Vocation comes from the Latin word vocare, which means, to call-or to be called. It is a response to our souls most deepest and unique desires. It is the thing that makes your heart beat faster, it makes you smile, it gives you angst when you see it being done poorly, it brings you to pensive thought late at night and then arises with you early in the morning. It’s what you dream about. It’s a feeling so deep that you couldn’t possibly describe it fully with words-it’s too big for words, too deep for song, and too complex for poetry. It’s you at your best.

When I’ve talked to people whom may at one time or another be confused as to what there calling might be, I ask them to think about the things in the world that frustrate them. What is going on that makes you upset or mad? It may be something that you love so much it literally causes you pain, which is where the word Passion comes from.

I can imagine you thinking about it and getting excited. I feel your heart beating faster at the thought of one day doing what you were put here to do. I am just as excited and anxious as you are. I want to see if I can help channel these emotions, dreams, and desires so that you can once and for all reconcile with the things that you have been called to do.  In realizing that you do have a calling, the first thing you have to do is love yourself enough to know that God chose you to carry this. Loving yourself is essential because after all, you can’t give something that you don’t have .I have met so many people, who have many awesome dreams, and their passion literally oozes out of them. However, because of feelings of inadequacy; not feeling special enough or worthy enough, Not being able to ever imagine that the dream may actually come true have left so many lost, sad, and so very bored-which is an often precursor to depression. I truly believe with all my heart that this is how people end up addicted to substances and in dire situations. The soul cannot function properly if it can’t do what it was wired for.

When I think about empowering people I come alive. When I think about people who are down and hurting or who have been mistreated, my insides literally hurt. All I want to do is to give them an encouraging word and remind them about the God who loves them so much. I want to provide that glimmer of joy or hope that could be the difference maker in their life. That is my everything, it’s why I do this. I spent so much time being afraid. Scared at what people would think and how I would be perceived. I would think, “ How could I help anyone?” “ Don’t you know how many times you have messed up in your past?” Such thoughts became my reason for running from my calling year after year.  There comes a time when you have to say  “no!” to all of the reasons why we shouldn’t go for it.

“ If you’re not willing to take a risk you can’t grow, if you

can’t grow you can’t become your best, if you can’t become your best, you can’t be happy, and if you can’t be happy, what else is there?”

Own it

Your friends and family may be awesome supporters of your dreams but sometimes its not that way. Family can serve as the best advocate or the greatest adversary.  The thought of expressing your dreams and deepest desires might be the scariest thing in the world for you.

Maybe you have gotten use to quenching your ideas and dreams because you know that if you voiced them, they would be struck down with discouragement and negativity. Before you know it, your heavenly dreams have just been brought down to an earthly reality. We are going to love those people though, and pray for them that they may find their calling too. When you know why you’re here, you want others to know and feel the same passion you feel. You no longer have to be in the club that talks about everybody’s faults, instead, we can now strive to focus on the best of people and how we can bring the best out of them. Fear will always be there, it’s a matter of deciding whether or not your dreams are more important to you than your fear. Put them up next to each other and see which one wins. It takes a distinct courage to never allow fear to have the last word or thought.

Harness it

Ephesians 4:1 says, “….I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received”

How can you be the very best steward of the task you have been given?

This is where discipline, hard work, and self-control come into the mix.  The time will come, where God will take you to places you have never dreamed, and for many I am sure this is happening now.

You want to be able to say, “Lord, look at my life, I am ready to do what you want me to do”

Seek out mentors that are doing what you want to do one day. Learn from them, ask question after question.Watch them, and emulate their moves and motives. I can’t tell you how many times I have knowingly annoyed my mentors and still do weekly. Keep them there to guide you and to help you, to give you an outside perspective different from what your parents may bestow.

Challenge it

Finally, there are many people out there doing what God has wired them to do, but they are not yet GREAT.  The biggest challenge we have is how can we use our God given gifts to help others?

This is where our Godly intuition becomes a heavenly ambition.

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering Gods grace in its various forms”-1Peter 4:10

This is truly the greatest challenge we have and there has never been a greater opportunity to put our gifts to use to help others.

I hope that these simple principles will help bring you a little closer to the life that you’ve imagined. God bless you!

Love,

Justin

  1. “Finally, there are many people out there doing what God has wired them to do, but they are not yet GREAT. The biggest challenge we have, is how can we use our God given gifts to help others?” I think the devil tries to use the desire for power and affirmation from the world to bring us a false security because of what we’re doing in life, especially when we are doing good things. As if we are the ones that got ourselves there or that the glory we receive is what we need and strive on. It’s a dangerous place when our attention isn’t directed to praising the provider of our strengths. Love the blog, J!
